Land acknowledgment

Despite the virtual nature of AMP 2020, the UC Santa Cruz-based organizing committee wishes to acknowledge that the land on which UC Santa Cruz is located is the unceded territory of the Awaswas-speaking Uypi Tribe. The Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, comprised of the descendants of indigenous people taken to missions Santa Cruz and San Juan Bautista during Spanish colonization of the Central Coast, is today working hard to restore traditional stewardship practices on these lands and heal from historical trauma.

This land acknowledgment was developed through a collaboration between the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band Chairman, the Amah Mutsun Relearning Program at the UCSC Arboretum, and UC Santa Cruz. More information about the Amah Mutsun can be found at the following linked pages:
