Transportation
The conference will be held at the Humanities and Social Sciences buildings at UCSC.
Parking on campus can be tricky, especially on weekdays. We encourage you to use the excellent Metro Bus System (routes 10, 15, 16, 19, 20 go to campus), carpool, and use rideshare services.
By air
Santa Cruz is served by four airports: SJC (San Jose; 34 mi), SFO (San Francisco; 62 mi), OAK (Oakland; 65.5 mi) and MRY (Monterey Regional; 55 mi).
Amtrak and Caltrain stop at San Jose Diridon station, from which the Highway 17 Express bus can be taken directly to Santa Cruz.
Public transportation and ride-share
Within Santa Cruz
You can use the Santa Cruz Metro Bus System, which has major routes to campus from Downtown and along Mission St and Bay St. The fare is $2.
Buses travel around campus either clockwise (numbered odd) or counter-clockwise (numbered even). The following bus lines stop near the conference venue: 15, 16, 19 & 20.
The most convenient bus stops are:
- Stevenson College/Bookstore, for odd-numbered (clockwise) buses.
- Crown College, for even-numbered (counter-clockwise) buses
For ride-share apps, the most convenient drop off point is Stevenson College Circle.
From airports
Direct transit connections from the airports take time, so a ride-share or rental car may be preferable. If you prefer public transportation, it is necessary to get to San Jose Diridon Station, where the Highway 17 Express bus to Santa Cruz departs from. For more information see this guide to Bay Area airports from Santa Cruz, or these instructions for getting to SJC in San Jose.
Bike share
Red Jump bikes are very popular in Santa Cruz and can be spotted all over town. Download the app to unlock these dockless, electric-assist bikes, and get to know the city on two wheels! While these are a great option for exploring Santa Cruz, we do not recommend them for getting to campus, as the ride is entirely uphill and pretty steep.
Parking
Parking is limited campus-wide, so we encourage you to carpool, to use a ride-sharing service, or to use the Metro Bus System.
On the weekend (Saturday and Sunday), visitors to the conference can park in either lot 107 or 109 for $5 a day. Find the kiosk for that lot and follow the on-screen instructions to obtain a weekend permit.
On Friday, you will need to purchase a visitor parking pass for $10 in order to park in lot 107 or 109. Visitors may purchase a temporary 1-Day permit from the Main Entrance Kiosk located on Coolidge Drive, between the hours of 7:00am and 1:00pm, Monday through Friday. From 1:00pm to 5:00pm all permits must be purchased at the TAPS Sales Office. If for some reason the Main Entrance Kiosk is not open, the TAPS Sales Office should be. A map of both locations is available here.
For more information, see the UCSC Transportation and Parking Services website.
