Assignment 9 Up to now we have three categories of Auxiliary verb: Category M: will would can could shall should may might must Category H: have1 Category B: be1 Which we have incorporated into the VP rule: VP -> {M}(H)(B) V ... {T} Make sure you understand the grammar as it stands, including how the order of Auxen is determined, and how each verb gets its form. 1. There is a fourth category of Auxiliary verb: Category D: do1 You'll need to make up your own sentences containing the Aux 'do'. Be aware that there is a main V 'do' (we'll call it do0). Don't confuse it with the Aux 'do' (which we'll call do1). Also, for this part of the exercise, don't try to include any negative sentences (like this one), or any contractions (like this one), or any questions (like "Do you want a whole lot of trouble?"). 2. Under our current theory of auxiliaries, how would you incorporate the Aux 'do'? Revise the grammar to include Category D in the right place. Do we need any new form rules? 3. Now re-do the assignment, taking negated sentences into account. NOTE: This is a VERY hard assignment. Maybe not even possible. But do your best.
