Assignment 20: Subject Raising and Same Subject Deletion

We now have an analysis of verbs like 'want', as in (1), and 'seem',
as in (2), which involves a deletion operation (Same Subject Deletion) in the
case of 'want' and a movement operation (Subject Raising) in the case of 'seem'.

(1) Harvey wants to like linguistics.
(2) Harvey seems to like linguistics.

We have seen that both of these operations result in a surface structure
of the form DP V to VP, but by very different paths. For each of the verbs
below, first show that it also fits in that surface structure pattern.
Then determine for each verb whether it is a Raising verb or a Control
verb. Marshal your evidence carefully, and remember that you have at least
four tools: Theta-role assignment, dummy subjects, idiom chunks, and passive
synonymy.

	tend
	intend
	prepare
	turn out
	prefer

Find one more Raising verb and one more Control verb, and demonstrate carefully
that they are what they are.
