signment 16:  Five Easy Derivations


For each of the following five sentences,
(a) if it is generated by our current grammar, show how it is derived.
(b) if it is not generated by our grammar, tell exactly why not.
(c) if it is not generated and yet grammatical, propose an amendment
to the grammar and then do (a).

(1)   Weren't the monkeys fed their peanuts?

(2)   Does she think that they will have been offered bananas?

(3)   On the last page of the document, didn't I see a reference to
      the minimalist program?

(4)   The story that Harvey had put disgusting pictures up on his website
      was believed by an amazing number of people.

(5)  *The papers were handed the students out.
