Assignment 15:  Rule Ordering


Assuming the Passive Transformation that we developed in class,
Investigate the following questions:

1.  How is the Passive Transformation ordered with respect to the
    Verb Form Rules?

2.  How is the Passive Transformation ordered with respect to the
    Pronoun Case Rule?

3.  How is the Passive Transformation ordered with respect to the
    YNQ Transformation?

4.  How is the Passive Transformation ordered with respect to the
    Do Insertion Transformation?

Illustrate the evidence for each of these ordering relations, giving
examples (especially ungrammatical ones) showing why the ordering you
propose is necessary.

Then

5.  What is the total ordering of the Verb Form Rules, the Pronoun Case
Rule, the Do Insertion Xn, the Passive Xn, the YNQ Xn, and the Negative
Placement Xn?

This will take some investigation.  Do it carefully.

6.  Finally, what is the ordering relation between the Passive Xn and the
Dative Movement Xn?
