Assignment 14: Rule ordering In a theoretical framework that includes Transformations, the question naturally arises whether Transformations can interact with each other. We have seen a couple of cases of this already: for example, an instance of V->T movement can feed an instance of T->C movement, as in (1) Have the children been feeding the monkeys? This assignment will be about exploring other instances of rule interaction, including both interactions between Transformations and interactions between Transformations and Form Rules. Assuming the Passive Transformation that we developed in class, Investigate the following questions: 1. How is the Passive Transformation ordered with respect to the Verb Form Rules (i.e. which has to happen first?)? 2. How is the Passive Transformation ordered with respect to the Pronoun Case Rule? 3. How is the Passive Transformation ordered with respect to the V->T Transformation? 4. How is the Passive Transformation ordered with respect to the T->C Transformation? 5. How is the Passive Transformation ordered with respect to the VP Deletion Transformation? 6. Finally, what is the ordering relation between the Passive Xn and the Dative Movement Xn? This will take some investigation. Do it carefully. Illustrate the evidence for each of these ordering relations, giving examples (especially ungrammatical ones) showing why the ordering you propose is necessary.
