Assignment 14: Five Easy Derivations Note: A "derivation" is a demonstration of how the grammar generates a sentence. For each of the following five sentences, (a) if it is generated by our current grammar, show how it is generated. (b) if it is not generated by our grammar, tell exactly why not. (c) if it is not generated and yet grammatical, propose an amendment to the grammar and then do (a). (1) Is the sky blue? (2) Does the fact that the sky is blue tell us that sunlight contains blue light? (3) On the last page of the document, didn't I see a reference to the mayor's monkey's arboreal adventures? (4) The papers from my other class, I have not read. (5) Was I given the correct information? Discuss everything thoroughly. The point of this assignment is to make sure you understand everything.
