Syllabus Linguistics 80V Structure of English Vocabulary MWF 9:30-11 Crown 104 Instructor: Jorge Hankamer 264 Stevenson College hank@ucsc.edu Course Web Site: http://babel.ucsc.edu/~hank/80V.html General Education Code: UNKNOWN A systematic study of the elements of English words: besides the practical goal of vocabulary consolidation and expansion, the course explores the historical origin and development of word elements, and analyzes their sound, meaning, and function in the contemporary language. Text: Denning, Kessler, and Leben, English Vocabulary Elements, 2nd Edition, Oxford University Press, 2007. You should have a copy of a good dictionary. Recommended: The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (3rd Edition, 1992). For etymologies, nothing is better than the Oxford English Dictionary. UCSC students have online access through the library. Coursework: There will typically be a reading (from the textbook), a written assignment, and a quiz each week. The quizzes will test your understanding of the vocabulary elements in focus that week. There will be in-class midterm exams in the fifth and ninth weeks, and a final during the regularly scheduled time in finals week. The course grade will be determined as follows: Assignments 30% Quizzes 10% Midterm 1 20% Midterm 2 20% Final 20% I will provide a more specific schedule of the quizzes and exams pretty soon. Quizzes and exams will ordinarily be on Wednesdays, assignments due on Fridays.
