The work for this course will be a mix of homework problems, readings, a squib or two, and a term paper. The sequence of topics is roughly: Basics: X-bar theory, selection, head movement. WH-movement in questions. Pied piping, superiority, successive cyclic movement; islands. Relative clauses. Topicalization. Parasitic gaps. The term paper will be developed during the second half of the course: topic selected at about week 5, progress report in week 7, presentation in week 10, and a final paper due at the end of finals week.
