SYLLABUS -- Linguistics 181 Structure of Romance TTH 3:20-4:55 Cowell 131 Instructor: Jorge Hankamer Stevenson 264 hank@ucsc.edu office hours M 3-4 Th 12-1 TA: Maho Morimoto mamorimo@ucsc.edu office hour TBA Course web site: http://babel.ucsc.edu/~hank/181.html The course this time will focus on morphology and syntax, though students who wish to pursue a topic in phonology or semantics for the term paper may certainly do so. It will be a homework-driven course, with written work due every week, usually on Tuesday. The problems will explore aspects of the morphology and syntax of several of the Romance languages, with particular attention to Spanish. There is no textbook, but readings will be posted on the course web site. A useful resource is Martin Harris and Nigel Vincent: The Romance Languages (Routledge 1988, 1990). Aside from the readings and problem sets, the course requires a final paper, on some topic in the phonology, morphology, syntax, or semantics of one or more of the Romance languages.
