Assignment 3		Ditransitive Verbs

This assignment has two parts:

0.  Read Barss and Lasnik 1986: A Note on Anaphora and Double Objects

We will discuss this paper on Thursday.  Be sure you understand all the
arguments, or have some damn good questions.

B&L say a lot of stuff about "domains".  What are they really talking
about?

1.  Individual Assignment, due Thursday October 11:

(1)   I gave some guy on the street who asked for it my paycheck.

(2)   I gave him the thing some guy on the street asked for.

What does (2) show?  Why does (1) not show anything interesting?

(3)   I assigned the student who asked for him Jim McCloskey as a mentor.

(4)   I assigned the student who asked for Jim McCloskey him as a mentor.

What do (3) and (4) show?

2.  Group Assignment, due Tuesday October 16:

Barss and Lasnik do not exactly propose a solution.  Your job is to
propose one, an explicit one, that provides a structure that enables
an account of all the facts.  The only requirement I impose is that
you can't use tangled trees.

Include an explanation of how your proposal relates to whatever theory
you have about Case.
