COMMENTS [JH] on Assignment 3 As usual, this response represents deep, broad, occasionally brilliant work. Several really interesting questions were raised, and some pretty well answered. One question that was not well answered was the one about whether VPD is bounded. We'll need to talk about that in class. The appendix about if-then structures raises really interesting issues. Somebody should write a paper on that. Some particular comments: p.5 Talk about the EPP: it looks like what you really have in mind is the VP-internal subject hypothesis. You should maybe be clear about this. (I'm not sure I'm clear what the EPP is, so maybe you should at least state it.) (11-12) The omission of the subject is independent of VPE, as you note below. The argument in the following paragraph looks interesting, but needs to be fleshed out a bit. pp. 6,10 You use the term "accessible" without ever saying what it means. That's a no-no. p.6 When you speak of a "T node which dominates VP1", do you really mean "dominate"? In the statement of the VPD rule, why do you specify the *lowest* VP, when you know that is incorrect? p.7 There is nothing ungrammatical about (15e); and (15b) is not a case of VPE (didn't you say T had to survive?) (16): Oh God. You have fallen right into one of the many traps. Please forget that you saw this, and pay close attention in class, where we will examine some real examples of backward VPE. This is not one. pp.9-14 Unfortunately, you did not come close to addressing the question about boundedness. The question is really simpler than you apparently made it out to be, and your investigation seems to have been hampered by an unnecessary and misleading preoccupation with coordinate structures. As was hinted at in the problem set, and should have been clear from the examples, VPE is *not* limited to coordinate structures. Obsessing on coordinate structures is not conducive to a clear-minded investigation of the boundednesss of VPE. We'll talk about this in class. p.13 Exx (22-22b) hold the key to the boundedness question. But first you have to understand the question. p.14 Are there any islands that cannot contain a VP? p.18 Very nice discussion of the similarities between NPE and VPE. As seen in class, they might extend even further. p.22 Note that there's at least one good argument against if-then structures being coordinations: they can't be reversed. True coordinations can.
