Syntax IV Spring quarter 2011 Syllabus Instructors: Office hours: Office: Jorge Hankamer M 10-11 W 9:30-10:30 Stevenson 264 James McCloskey Class times: Place: MW 12:15-1:45 The Cave What it is: Syntax IV will be an extension of Syntax III: a further exploration of phenomena and theoretical developments beyond those encountered in Syntax I and II, but building on the foundation laid in those courses. In Syntax IV there will be more reading, at the rate of about one article per week; the choice of topics will be influenced in part by the existence of accessible papers to read. There will also be some problems, to be done as group projects as in Syntax III. For each reading, two students will be designated as presenters: they will be responsible for leading the discussion of the reading on the day that it is due. The main written work for the course, in addition to the occasional problems, will be a sequence of squibs due in the fifth, seventh, and ninth weeks; or a sustained development of a term paper on a particular topic, proceeding in squib-sized stages.
