Syntax II Spring 2018 Assignment 7 Due Monday April 23 WH Questions with more than one WH There are WH Questions containing more than one XP[+wh]: (1) Who saw who? (2) Which of the children chose which book? (3) I wonder who Bob persuaded to betray who(m). (4) She forgot to tell me how many ccs of antifloxide I should inject into which rat. (5) I want to know who Bill thinks the regulations require that we inform about what. (6) Who said what to whom is a real mystery. The above are grammatical, and demonstrate something interesting about WH questions, i.e. that a single C[+Q,0wh] can have more than one XP[+wh] in its command domain. It might be a good idea to draw the trees of these examples to see what they look like. Now observe the following: (1b) *Who did who see? (2b) *Which book did which of the children choose? (3b) *I wonder who Bob persuaded who to betray. (4b) *She forgot to tell me into which rat I should inject how many ccs of antifloxide. (5b) *I want to know what Bill thinks the regulations require that we inform who about. (6b) *What who said to whom is a real mystery. Reformulate your theory of WHQ movement to account for the new data. By the way, this one is OK. Why? (7) Which book was chosen by which of the children?
