Assignment 2

Provide and justify analyses for the following:

	(1)  The pig is eager to lie in the mud.

	(2)  The pig is certain to lie in the mud.



Start by examining the adjectives 'eager' and 'certain'.  How many
participants are involved in each case?  State subcategorization
restrictions for these adjectives.

Propose Deep Structures for (1) and (2) that are in accord with their
subcategorization restrictions.

State explicitly the transformational operations that are needed to
derive the surface structures.

Justify your analyses by dummy tests (using all the dummy subjects you
can think of) and idiom chunk tests.

FOR EXTRA CREDIT:

Find another adjective like 'eager' and another one like 'certain'
(and justify your choice).
