How to register and participate

There is no cost to attend HSP2022, but we ask that you register officially:

Registration link

You will first be asked to log in to our conference platform. If you either submitted a paper or served as an abstract reviewer, then you already have an account! You can log in via those credentials. If you don't yet have an account on the Oxford Abstracts system, you can create one instantly using your preferred email address, or via credentials from LinkedIn or Google. Graphical account creation and registration HOWTO.

Benefits of registration

Registered participants gain access to all program features. They can bookmark abstracts, calendar sessions of note, make comments on papers/posters, engage in private or group chats, and share a name badge listing their interests and contact info. Only registered participants will receive information about how to meet with poster presenters 1:1 during the conference.

Presentation format

Plenary presenters (papers, invited talks) will take place synchronously via the Zoom webinar platform. Submitted, peer-reviewed papers will follow a standard, moderated 20/10 min format. Invited talks will follows a moderated 40/15 format. Instructions on how to join the plenary session will be provided on this web site shortly before the conference starts.

Poster presenters have two options for making their presentation. Read our guidance here. The conference organizers will reach out to poster presenters directly about their preferred modality.

Special theme: Prosody, Gesture, and Meaning

HSP2022 will interrogate the connection between prosody, gesture and meaning. We are delighted to welcome the following researchers to address questions related to the perception and production of prosody and the planning and interpretation of co-speech gesture. By what mechanisms are these multimodal communication channels integrated with, or segregated from, other aspects of linguistic cognition, such as syntax, compositional semantics and pragmatics? How does our ability to process gestural or prosodic features develop in first- and second-language?

Conference format

HSP2022 will operate as a virtual conference.
Virtual core

There will be a virtual “core” scientific program organized centrally by UC Santa Cruz. It will consist of invited presentations, peer-reviewed plenary presentations, and poster sessions. Anyone will be able to participate fully just virtually.

Self-organized satellite gatherings

Although we have canceled the in-person events in Santa Cruz, folks may wish to gather with other HSP-ers in-person. We encourage any individual or group to self-organize a gathering local to themselves, where safe and feasible. These can be of any size and scope and formality.

We will maintain and publish a clearinghouse of known self-organized satellite gatherings. We've also created a sourcebook of ideas.

Santa Cruz In-person

The in-person events in Santa Cruz have been cancelled due to the consequences of the COVID-19 Omicron surge.

Code of Conduct

HSP2022 is dedicated to providing a harassment-free conference experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age, religion, or nationality. We do not tolerate harassment of conference participants in any form. Conference participants violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from the conference, at the discretion of the conference organizers.

Harassment includes, but is not limited to:

  • Verbal comments that reinforce social structures of domination related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age, religion, nationality
  • Sexual images in public spaces
  • Deliberate intimidation, stalking, or following
  • Behaviors intended to make a person or group feel unwelcome, or to encourage ostracism of any individual or group
  • Harassing photography or recording
  • Sustained disruption of talks or other events
  • Inappropriate physical contact
  • Unwelcome sexual attention
  • Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behaviors

These behaviors are unacceptable both during synchronous interactions, on the conference web platform, in event-related chat and discussion groups, and on social media.

Enforcement

Participants who are asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately. If a participant engages in harassing behavior, event organizers retain the right to take any actions to keep the Conference on Human Sentence Processing a welcoming environment for all participants. This includes warning the offender, expulsion from the conference, barring from participation in future conferences or their organization, reporting the incident to the offender’s local institution or funding agencies, or reporting the incident to local law enforcement.

Organizers may take action to redress anything with the intent or clear impact of disrupting the event or making the environment hostile for any participants.

We expect participants to follow these rules at all event venues (including on electronic platforms like Zoom or OxfordAbstracts) and any event-related social activities. We think people should follow these rules outside event activities too!

Reporting

If someone makes you or anyone else feel unsafe or unwelcome, please report it to conference staff as soon as possible. Harassment and other code of conduct violations reduce the value of our event for everyone. People like you make our scientific community a better place, and we want you to be happy here. Should you wish to report an incident, you may contact any event staff below:
